About The Job



Direct simulator support and engineering groups to support and achieve the goals of the company and department as a whole.



  • Keeps informed of day-to-day training operations, maintains an account of the reasons for simulator downtime and training delays and cancellations and oversees support and engineering efforts to eliminate these delays through preventive maintenance, revising operations, improving services and/or modifying processes, equipment or facilities
  • Develop strategic plans as a basis for the development and enhancement of technical support used to achieve business goals
  • Acts as liaison with our simulator partners, manufacturers, and vendors, as well as other sections and departments within the Company, to accomplish the goals of the Simulator Support Department
  • Oversees evaluation of new methods, products, and equipment to improve simulator reliability and/or reduce maintenance costs
  • Keeps informed of changes and requirements of Federal Aviation Regulations; reviews and oversees submittal of comments on proposed changes and implementation of configuration changes as required
  • Ensures Simulator Support and Engineering policies and procedures meet the needs of American Airlines and comply with Federal Aviation Regulations; reviews/approves additions and revisions to policies and procedures
  • Oversees and directs all maintenance activity under direct responsibility at the DFW Flight Academy, the CLT Training Center, and anywhere else training is conducted, where the training equipment is owned by American Airlines
  • Ensure safety is the top priority in the maintenance of all training equipment
  • Ensures that the team is involved in every aspect of the operation, creating unity and a sense of purpose and collaboration
  • Initiates, coordinates and implements the programs required to maintain qualification, repair, or improve simulators and other training equipment

  • Manages the support requirements with Flight Training personnel, FAA, Purchasing, outside vendors and others as appropriate
  • Ensures that documentation drawings, maintenance data and simulator software is maintained, recorded and backed up to ensure continuation and currency
  • Oversees the compliance with fleet configuration changes as approved by appropriate Flight Training Management
  • Manages Simulator Engineering to ensure implementation and tracking of engineering changes
  • Ensures the availability of tools and materials for the timely correction of faults or equipment improvements
  • Manages the coordination with Simulator Engineering and outside services to ensure timely completion of simulator and training equipment projects
  • Coordinates with Flight Finance and others to provide budgetary information required for cost-effective implementation of expense and capital plans
  • Participates in the management of the Company’s relationship with organized labor, ensures labor contract is properly administered, and acts as a leader in contract negotiations
  • Hires new employees and participate in the selection process to promote existing personnel when required
  • Oversees that appropriate FAA testing, preventative maintenance and modifications are performed on the flight simulators and training devices
  • Participates in procurement of new training equipment
  • Participates in procurement of services and updates to maintain equipment qualification
  • Administers the Performance Management Process for all direct reports
  • Develops, coordinates, and assumes final responsibility for departmental policies and procedures
  • Assists in the development of capital, expense, and headcount budgets for Engineering and monitors/controls costs associated with this budget
  • Maintains current knowledge of changes and strategies in the Simulation field
  • Keeps staff informed of corporate policies and ensure adherence to policies
  • Attends industry meetings and represents American Airlines at meetings, as required




  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Electronics, or related discipline or equivalent experience, advanced degree preferred
  • At least 7 years of experience leading team members
  • Working knowledge of American Airlines budgeting / finance / accounting practices / developing five point justifications
  • Strong managerial, interpersonal, communication and PC skills
  • Must pass a background reference check and criminal fingerprint check
  • Basic knowledge of flight simulation hardware / software technologies and systems
  • Working knowledge of simulator / training device engineering procedures
  • Ability to create cohesive teams, involving all levels of the team
  • Experience managing managers, non-managers and proven record of working with labor work groups
  • Experience managing complex projects
  • Ability to work well under pressure, meet deadlines and maintain the highest regard for safety
  • Excellent verbal & written communication skills with ability to interact effectively with employees at all levels within the organization as well as with external vendors and agencies
