​This job is a member of the Operations Team within the American Airlines Credit Union. The role is responsible for loan and account collections and recovery as well as loss mitigation/fraud prevention and resolution for the Credit Union.

What you'll do

  • Lead a team of 30+ employees, overseeing the collection and recovery function and loss mitigation/fraud function for the Credit Union
  • Understand that the Credit Union’s holistic goal is to meet our member’s financial needs and grow, which means minimizing impact to legitimate members, understanding an acceptable level of charge-offs and fraud / dispute losses will occur, but managing and minimizing losses
  • Ensure objectives are set and met for the department’s employees to assist members facing financial hardships or fraud and dispute claims, and to reduce Credit Union losses and lower delinquency
  • Measure, analyze and report collection and fraud trends and results to improve underwriting, product/member origination, and employee and member awareness
  • Oversee and develop fraud/non-fraud dispute reduction strategies
  • Research and identify fraud trends that lead to collection charge-offs and write-offs, and partner with other Credit Union departments to mitigate risks
  • Prepare reports for senior leadership, and quarterly for loans and charge-offs to report to Board of Directors
  • Review Red Flag/ID Theft trends and recommendations with the Supervisory Committee annually
  • Manage foreclosure and repossession process and disposition for secured loans
  • Mature Credit Union’s enterprise risk management focus, create strategies to mitigate and control risks, develop collection and fraud risk appetite statements, etc.
  • Manage projects that improve department processes and advance automation
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • The selected candidate will be responsible for ensuring the security and confidentiality of all account and related information which is part of their work and for ensuring that his/her work is in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations including, but not limited to, the Bank Secrecy Act.

What you'll do

  • Establish and maintain policies and procedures for the collection of delinquent accounts and charge-off of loans, shares and share drafts, and fraud/dispute management
  • Ensure compliance with all regulations (e.g., FDCPA, CFPB, TCPA, Bankruptcy)
  • Coordinate internal and external audits and work with regulators (e.g., NCUA, CFPB)
  • Develop and oversee Credit Union vendor management relationships for the collection system, fraud system, card fraud rules, vehicle repossessions, other collection tools, recovery, REOs, etc.
  • Conduct regular benchmarking with other financial institutions and industry reviews to increase strategic focus, learn best practices, enhance processes, increase automation, and improve department results
  • Participate in industry learning for collections and fraud via industry conferences, meetings, etc.
  • Develop an annual budget and oversee department operating budget throughout the year
  • Ensure the department has a sound business continuity and disaster recovery plan
  • Ensure employees are cross-trained and following policies and regulatory guidelines

Minimum Qualifications- Education & Prior Job Experience

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Experience leading and motivating a team

Preferred Qualifications- Education & Prior Job Experience

  • ​Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Finance or a related field, or equivalent experience relevant to the job
  • Previous banking or Credit Union experience in branch operations, lending, collections, fraud or risk management
  • Experience with collection, and repossession laws
  • Experience with fraud and enterprise risk management

  • Skilled in Microsoft Office software (i.e., Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) gained through either work experience with the software or education and hands-on use of the software
  • Ability to demonstrate excellent oral and written communications skills and exercise effective interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate with all levels of staff and management
  • Ability to demonstrate strong leadership skills
  • Ability to supervise and coach multiple staff personnel, including manager-level and supervisors
  • Ability to demonstrate excellent people management and employee engagement skills, including leading, developing, coaching and motivating staff
  • Ability to solve diverse complex issues while balancing legal requirements, member needs and Credit Union reputation
  • Ability to maintain composure when dealing with extremely sensitive and potentially stressful situations
  • Knowledge of consumer and mortgage lending, Reg Z (Truth in Lending), expedited funds availability (Reg CC), dispute claims (Reg E) and other financial industry regulations and regulators (FDCPA, CFPB, TCPA, Bankruptcy)
  • Ability to stay current on all collection issues and privacy laws
  • Ability to work independently under pressure & deadlines with minimal supervision
  • Ability to identify and implement continuous process improvement initiatives
  • Ability to maintain satisfactory performance and attendance
  • Ability to pass applicable American Airlines and Credit Union pre-hire compliance checks
