American Airlines is hiring a communications specialist who is a strategic thinker, creative writer and team player to help us educate and story tell around charitable giving, community outreach and team member recognition initiatives. This role is part of a dynamic and collaborative team that helps shape the company's actions, along with its engagement with internal and external stakeholders. The specialist reports to the Director of Public Affairs Communications and works closely with senior leaders in Global Engagement and other business units.
  • The right person for this job must be able to work in a fast-paced, high-profile environment with tight deadlines, including real-time issues management. This individual must be able to tailor communications to different audiences in the ways that matter most to our team members, customers, media and the general public.
What you'll do
  • Maintains a thorough understanding of business needs –executing compelling communications strategies and advancing the company’s objectives around its Let Good Take Flight platform.  
  • Drafts content for an array of audiences and platforms, aimed at communicating our values and actions to team members, the communities we serve and other stakeholders.
  • Assists the Director of Public Affairs Communications, Managing Director of Community Relations and their teams in developing and executing short- and long term communications plans in a dynamic environment.
  • Manages national, local and trade media inquiries, pitches stories and coordinates media briefings as needed.
  • Supports rapid response communications related to area of focus, including through volatile and fast-moving issues with tight deadline.
  • Project manages various activations and events that support our giving initiatives, volunteer programs and consumer marketing assets
  • Assumes “on call” evening and weekend duties in conjunction with team calendar.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, 24/7 environment to help lead American's effort.
All you'll need for success

Minimum Qualifications- Education & Prior Job Experience

  • Required minimum of 3 years relevant work experience in communications in a corporate or agency setting.
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications or relevant field, or equivalent experience / training.

Preferred Qualifications- Education & Prior Job Experience

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, and experience in strategic communications planning.

  • Must have excellent time-management skills with the ability to handle multiple projects at the same time and meet deadlines effectively, efficiently and independently.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to adapt and respond quickly to changing landscapes and to work well under pressure and tight deadlines.
  • Team player with ability to work successfully at all levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft office software (Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint).
  • Willingness to travel.
